Growing vegetables is seen to be for large plots of land but it is perfectly possible to grow vegetables in small spaces or containers. It is very rewarding to grow tomatoes and cucumbers in pots on your gallery or patio, or peas climbing trellises on your balcony.

Vegetables can be harvested all year round from these small spaces, but you will need to carefully choose seeds of miniature varieties. Look through seed catalogues or the shelves at your local garden center for suitable varieties, often these are labeled miniature, midget or space saving. You also need to decide if you want to grow miniature plants with full size fruit or plants with miniature fruit, such as cherry tomatoes or radishes.

Varieties

Some tiny varieties include Baby Head Cabbage, Baby Finger Carrots, Baby Corn,Tom Thumb Lettuce, Baby Boo and Baby Pam, both miniature pumpkins, Easter Egg radish, Spoon a miniature tomato and Sweet Dumplings a tiny squash. There are even varieties ideal fo growing in hanging baskets. An appropriately named tomato variety, Hanging Basket profusely bears one inch tomatoes among ornamental dark green leaves.

Growing Conditions

Most vegetables, even miniature ones will still need a full eight hours a day sunlight so plan to place your pots in suitable positions.

Use a good potting compost and water frequently. Small pots will dry out very quickly and most vegetables need plenty of water.
